This stuff has been around for a long time. They just have high-fiber foods that are made with grains mentioned in scripture. It's sold in health food stores. I've bought the bread before. It's not a gimmick. It's health food.

It's actually really filling bread. Maybe not Jesus junk, b/c it's Old Testament.

I have very bad allergies. My doctor told me to try this bread. It has helped and I don't get the reaction I do from other breads. This is one product that I don't think the company is trying to make money off the Bible. They are just stating where this particular recipe came from. They make many other kinds of bread. This one isn't really marketed to Christians. It's mostly marketed as a health food item. Just my thoughts.

The bread is actually quite good.

Yeah, it is just health food. Probably the most popular maker of sprouted bread products which is a more traditional and healthy way to make bread than the modern method using flour.

Some of this stuff is really good, but it's a little higher price than I like to pay for my bread. It doesn't espouse that you'll become holier or anything...though it does give new meaning to the term "seed money"...

Here's the verse in context:
9"But as for you, take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet and spelt, put them in one vessel and make them into bread for yourself; you shall eat it according to the number of the days that you lie on your side, three hundred and ninety days.
10"Your food which you eat shall be twenty shekels a day by weight; you shall eat it from time to time.
11"The water you drink shall be the sixth part of a hin by measure; you shall drink it from time to time.
12"You shall eat it as a barley cake, having baked it in their sight over human dung."
13Then the LORD said, "Thus will the sons of Israel eat their bread unclean among the nations where I will banish them."
Somehow, I imagine that had they included the part about it being cooked over human excrement, it would not sell quite so well.

This stuff is awesome. You should try it.

LOL Michael, I was thinking the same thing!!

This is good bread. I don't see how making bread from a scripture recepie is a bad thing.

I love your web site but you missed the mark on this one in my opinion. I have been buying this bread for about two years now. Its NOT "Jesus Junk" nor idolatry in my opinion and really doesn't belong in the "MOI". I think you are doing a disservice to the folks that make this bread. My two cents and I am unanimous in it. ;-)

This is not "Jesus Junk". This is a healthy form of bread made without the refined flour that our common "white" bread is. It's very good for people that have intolerance for wheat and wheat gluten. Sprouted grains and whole grains are healthier for the human consumption because it's high in fiber which cleanses the digestive system. It's filling. Though it's more costly, it's a wiser choice of bread.
This isn't one of those tacky items that are found in Christian bookstores that is supposed to be a "witness". Though I can see, without further research, how one may think this is one of those tacky items with a Bible verse to market to cultural Christians.
It's really better for the body than white bread.

I think the curator is pointing out how the Bible is being used to market a product (sound familiar?). the bread is not evil, it's sounds like a lot of people like it :-) but should they use the Bible to sell a product?

ok. I'm having balanced look at this. For a long time Ezekial 4:9 was the about the only "prepared food" product out there that people with gluten/celiac's could have. However in reading the scripture in context, the Ezekial 4:9 passage this bread is based on isn't meant to be some fantastic bread, more like rations or a lack of basic necessities.
Thankfully today food manufactures are more in tuned with people's needs and there are plenty of gluten free options out there. just my take.

Celiacs beware. This is NOT GLUTEN-Free, it contains wheat, barley, and spelt. Which ALL contain gluten. It is delicious bread, but it spoils very fast, and is a little on the heavy/dense side. Also, feeling obligated to toast it over human dung means I'd rather tear into a crusty round of sourdough.
I have the holy toaster which I've crumbled my feces into for the Ezekiel bread, and then the regular toaster for everything else.

Context is everything. This seems to indicate coming judgment on Israel. Selling bread with Scripture on it and touting it as somehow better because the ingredients are listed in Scripture is using Scripture as superstition at a price, imo. Its taking what God put forth as a sign of judgment on Israel, and pretending its all good and worthy of SELLING. This is no different that the TBN/Warren crowds.
Eze 4:4 "Then lie on your left side, and place the punishment of the house of Israel upon it. For the number of the days that you lie on it, you shall bear their punishment.
Eze 4:13 And the LORD said, "Thus shall the people of Israel eat their bread unclean, among the nations where I will drive them."
Eze 4:14 Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I have never defiled myself. From my youth up till now I have never eaten what died of itself or was torn by beasts, nor has tainted meat come into my mouth."
Eze 4:15 Then he said to me, "See, I assign to you cow's dung instead of human dung, on which you may prepare your bread."
Eze 4:16 Moreover, he said to me, "Son of man, behold, I will break the supply of bread in Jerusalem. They shall eat bread by weight and with anxiety, and they shall drink water by measure and in dismay.
Eze 4:17 I will do this that they may lack bread and water, and look at one another in dismay, and rot away because of their punishment.

From their website:
"This Biblical Bread is Truly the Staff of Life"
Yes, they DO think its more spiritual.

This bread is very good for those who cannot eat bread made from flour. I've eaten it on and off for many years. I wouldn't catagorize this as "Jesus junk" - they just take the bread recipe from Ezekiel. I think you're wrong on this one.
Posted by: JP | November 14, 2008 at 11:38 AM
I have tried other breads but for my health issues this one causes the least amount of problems. They could call it anything they want it just works well for me. I never really read the verses it came from though & thanks to those who posted them in context.

I'm a vegetarian, and I've heard that this combination of grains is a God-given recipe for a complete protein without the use of animal products.
Posted by: Devorah | November 16, 2008 at 02:23 AM
Actually, people with celiac disease can't eat Ezekiel bread because it has wheat, barley, and spelt in it. I have Celiac, as well as severe rice and potato allergies. Blah.
I'm not real comfy with the quoting of Scripture all over these kinds of products, though. It seems like it preys on people who are looking for "miracles." If the bread is good, that's one thing, but I know of too many people who just go nuts over things that are "spiritual" when they really aren't. I know people who rave about Ezekiel bread and only because of the couple of out of context verses on the label.

I apologize- I forgot they had a GF line. So celiacs can eat it.
But I do think it is still a mistake to blazon Bible verses all over products.

Hi guys,
I'd put this in all caps but I don't want to reinforce the stereotype of New Yawka's as being obnoxious...
That being said, I am a cancer patient and my doctor actually recommends this for me and also to get off MILK and RED MEAT!!! PLEASE!!!

You left off their Genesis 1:29 bread. It is basically the Ezekiel bread but with lots of seeds and nuts mixed in. Thankfully the Genesis passage does not mention human dung but clearly they are stretching its meaning a bit. Whether the company thinks they are being spiritual or they just thought it was a good idea to follow the recipe, my wife and I swear by the stuff. We don't eat it for necessarily any religious reasons but more for health reasons and we've seen the difference. Its good food but I guess bad theology.

Ok, this is not "Jesus Junk" - this is a health food made from the grains mentioned in that verse of Ezekiel. That's it. Their products are great, especially the sprouted grain products because they don't upset the stomach like wheat flour products do and they are really healthy and nourishing (although I do not like the added soy and I have written to them about why they added soy - it's not in Ezekiel!). Sadly, I have heard Chris mock these very types of health products on his show once when he was sick and people were sending him emails about health remedies. He laughed while simultaneously sniffling and speaking in mucus-tone...I found this to be very ignorant. Chris, with all due respect, you should listen to those who recommend God's natural foods and medicines - we know about these things (and no, I wasn't one of the ones who wrote to him). Natural remedies work far better than artificial drugs and are completely safe since they are basically food items! I virtually never get sick anymore thanks to nutrition and the way God has designed it to nourish the body so that it can heal itself naturally. More Christians should recognize the value of quality nutrition and natural supplementation in maintaining health and nourishing our bodies properly. Anyway, I know I went off on a tangent but I think sometimes Chris can get a little arrogant and act like a know-it-all. Ezekiel bread is awesome and Chris would not get colds if he would listen to his listeners :)
