Gilligan's Island and the Seven Deadly Sins "Bible Study"

If the Beverly Hillbillies "Bible Study" isn't your cup of tea, you may want to try the Gilligan's Island "Bible Study".

If we were to write the product description for this "Bible Study" here's what we'd say about it:

This light-hearted, relevant and humorous approach to the Seven Deadly Sins will have you and your small group laughing out loud as you enjoy a three hour tour of this classic T.V. show. As an added bonus you may also occasionally hear verses from the Bible. But don't worry, these verses have been diluted so that no one in your small group will feel overly convicted or judged. The best part is that this "Bible Study" is virtually "cross free". That means you can invite your Muslim and Mormon friends to your small group and they won't feel offended by an overtly Christian message about Jesus' Christ being God in Human flesh, His death on the cross for our sins and His bodily resurrection from the dead three days later.

As the Bible says, "The cross is a stumbling block for Jews and foolishness to Greeks" that's why we virtually removed the cross from our "Bible Study". We wouldn't want to put any stumbling blocks in the way of people who are trying to live God pleasing lives.

Um, last time I checked, the "Seven Deadly Sins" didn't appear in the Bible...

I thought this was satire until I went to the "Entertainment Ministry" website. It looks real, it is, isn't it? I like all those TV shows (well, most of them) but not in this way. I know there are good morals portrayed in those old shows (which you'll never see in today's TV line-up) but they were never intended to replace the Bible. On the website it says "Identifying God's Purpose in Popular Entertainment." Is anyone here sick and tired of hearing the word "purpose?" I cringe evey time I hear it. I also don't like "seeker", "seeker-friendly", and "unchurched." These Rick Warren buzz words have worn out their welcome. I agree with Mrs. Pilgrim (I always do). I missed the part in the Bible where it lists the seven deadly sins. I thought all sin was deadly, not just seven.

Mrs. P is right. The deadly sins do not appear in the Bible, though they did figure prominently in the works of Thomas Aquinas and other Christian writers.

This Gilligan's Island DVD is nonsense (nonsense was not the first word that sprung to mind - I'm sure you can imagine what it was.) Ditch this trash now.

I agree whenever I hear the word purpose it makes me cring!! It's like a red flag to me.

There are seven deadly sins mentioned in the Bible. They're found in Proverbs 6:16-19.

Nice catch, Trent...And naturally, they don't boil down to easy one-word categories like the above.

I am working on a unique idea...it's called "The Bible Bible Study."

Thank you, Mrs. Pilgrim. I appreciate that.

Yes, there are seven sins mentioned in Proverbs 6:16-19. They are said to be abominations to the Lord. There are also sins mentioned in Galations 5:19-21. They are "adultry, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings....they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God." That sounds pretty deadly to me. Some might be the same as the Big Seven but not all. I don't even know what some of them are! I'd better do some um, what is it?, oh yeah, REAL BIBLE STUDY! My point is (as in my first post) that ALL sin is deadly, not just The Big Seven in Proverbs. By the way, the sins in Galations are mentioned right before the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance). Flesh-bad, Spirit-good.

I've heard of this before. As I recall, Ginger was Lust, Mary Ann was Envy, the Professor was Pride, Mr. Howell was Greed, Mrs. Howell was Sloth, Skipper was Wrath, and Gilligan was Gluttony. There's supposedly another camp that says Skipper was Wrath and Gluttony and Gilligan represented the devil, but they're wrong.

Here is something the Lord provided us through John and witnessed in the first account of sinning that should simplify the categories / types of sin when you try to explain it to someone else...

All sin falls into at least ONE of THREE categories as John explains here:

(1Jn 2:15) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

(1Jn 2:16) For ALL [that means...ALL] that is in the world, [sin category #1]the lust of the flesh, and [sin category #2] the lust of the eyes, and [sin category #3] the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Now, let's go to the original sin and you will see just how marvelous Johns teaching apply here:

"…saw that the tree was good for food [‘the lust of the flesh,’ I John 2:16], and that it was pleasant to the eyes [‘the lust of the eyes,’ I John 2:16], and a tree to be desired to make one wise [‘the pride of life,’ I John 2:16],
she did eat… and he did eat" (Gen. 3:6).

See, Eve SINNED well before she partook - the partaking was not the sin - it was the lusting that preceded the partaking that was sin.

The "Seven Deadly Sins" are mentioned in the Bible, however, I have a problem with identifying them as seven "deadly" sins.

Calling them "deadly sins" is a sly and subtle way of suggesting that because these sins are "deadly", other sins are not. "If these are deadly sins, then these others must be, like, 'nuisance' or petty sins..."

ALL SIN IS DEADLY!
