Time for a Pop-Quiz

We thought we'd put together a pop-quiz. Hopefully it won't be too hard because each question is multiple choice. To make the quiz a little easier we've also provided links for all of the answers so that you can get more information before you make your decision. Are you ready? Here we go.

PetercrucifiedQuestion 1

This is a painting depicting the crucifixion of the the Apostle Peter (click on the image to enlarge it). Church history tells us that he was martyred by the Emperor Nero in Rome. However, Peter didn't feel worthy enough to experience the same death as our Lord and savior Jesus Christ so he was crucified upside down. It took several days for him to die.

Why was the Apostle Peter martyred?

A. Because he was caught preaching a sermon series on How to Have the Greatest Sex Ever?

B. Because he was teaching people how to love themselves?

C. Because he proclaimed forgiveness of sins and salvation alone through Jesus Christ?

(The correct answer is C. If you thought it was A or B, then you need to read your Bible more)

---

Beheadin
Question 2

The statue to the right depicts the beheading of the Apostle Paul (click on the image to enlarge it). He was also murdered by the Emperor Nero. Because he was a Roman citizen, Paul's death was 'easier' than Peter's. Paul was beheaded.

Why was the Apostle Paul martyred?

A. He stubbornly preached 'Christ Crucified for Sinners'. A message that is a stumbling block for Jews and foolishness for Greeks.

B. He was caught teaching people "How to Become a Better You" and was overheard sharing the 7 keys for improving your life everyday.

(The Answer is A. If you chose B then you are probably attending a heretical church)

---

Question 3

Watch the video posted below. It is one of the deleted scenes from the movie Gladiator. It depicts Christians being fed to the lions in the coliseum. After viewing the video answer the question below.

Why were these Christians put to death in the Coliseum?

A. Because they were teaching that God wants people to be rich and prosperous.

B. Because they were teaching the 10 Commandments of Health and Wellness.

C. Because they trusted in Christ for their salvation and the forgiveness of their sins.

(The correct answer is C. If you got this one wrong please send us an email and we will pray for you.)

---

Question 4 - (This is the toughest one. Be sure to read all the options before you answer.)

Africa_poverty_2This picture depicts a poverty stricken African child infected with the AIDS virus. He will be dead within the year.

Which message do you think he needs to hear the most?

A. Learn How to Have a Dream Family

B. The Gospel According to the Beatles.

C. How to discover his life's purpose.

D. How to Live Your Best Life Now

E. Overcoming Dysfunctional Relationships

F. How to have an iLife.

G. That Jesus Christ died on the cross to atone for his sins and that he needs to repent and believe the gospel.

(The correct answer is G. If you got this one wrong then we REALLY need to talk. Have your Christian friends contact us and we'll schedule an intervention for you.)

---

Have you noticed that none of the popular American sermon themes seem appropriate in these contexts. There is a reason for that. The reason is because too many pastors are not preaching sound doctrine. Instead, they are preaching messages that tickle the ears of the unsaved in order to attract a crowd.

---

If you've found this quiz to be eye-opening or convicting would you please email the link to the quiz to your Christian friends and family?

Chris,

What a post! Keep on brother!

If the apostle peter had preached a sermon series on how to have the greatest sex ever the romans would have legalized christianity rather than persecute christians.

this pop-quiz is sobering

Sobering and Powerfull! you cant get any clearer than this one what is wrong with today's False Gospel.

I linked to this it was so awesome!

Absolutely wonderful. The most powerful thing I've read in a while. Praise the Lord for wonderful outlets such as this.

Great quiz, would be good to take for anyone professing to be a Christian.

In the amazing grace of Jesus Christ,
Martin

re: #4... I'm pretty sure he doesn't need to "hear" anything... he needs to eat something. Jesus didn't walk around telling people in physical need that they are hell-bound sinners. He met their needs. Apparently, Jesus thought this was what they needed FIRST. I'm gonna go with Jesus example on this one... he generally knows what he's talking about.

Eric what are you talking about? The Bible says that Jesus went from town to town preaching a message of repentance.

Matthew 4:17 - “From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

This kid is going to die. Would you actually withhold the gospel from him and let him go to hell?

Sorry but I'm going to follow Jesus' actual example instead of your made up example

Eric, for your conscience's sake, let's try again:

"AFTER YOU FEED THE CHILD, what message does he most need to hear?"

Seriously, why are you so fixed on the notion that Gospel preaching and acts of charity don't happen at the same time? And why, pray, do you assume that anyone here would actively refuse to offer the kid some food?

Eric, I don't think you read the question correctly.

"This picture depicts a poverty stricken African child infected with the AIDS virus. He will be dead within the year."

You see, he will be DEAD within a year. No food, or drink, or medicine can cure him. On the other hand, if he was starving and needed food, then YES, christians should do their best to meet this immediate need FIRST.

So true! So sad. Only the true Gospel is what helps a person. You can "live your best life now" and in the end go straight to hell!

Well, John Piper said it best:

http://www.godtube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=29b26cfc46fd9a91ec47

Soli Deo Gloria!

Eric and Mrs. Pilgrim are right. We get so caught up in what we want people to know, but we don't address the things that are keeping them from hearing. Why not feed the child, offer medical intervention, and offer the gospel. If we can afford blog accounts, maybe we can afford food and medicine for children around the world. We also have a better opportunity in sharing Christ if we focus on hunger and aids relief. I bet they would be very interested in what we said and stood for. The other questions here are flawed. You are attempting to address 1st century culture with 21st century culture. They aren't the same. Someone might say God and the Bible don't change - very true. But the exposition of it should adapt to the culture.

Tyrone- "He'll be dead within the year..." Jesus couldn't prevent that?

Mrs. Pilgrim- I don't assume that ANYONE here would deny him food. It's just that it wasn't mentioned AT ALL and seems to me (from the scriptural accounts, see below) that is what Jesus would actually provide FIRST.

Jason- I'm talking about what Jesus did when he ran into individuals with specific, physical needs... like the boy in that photo. The verse you quoted is a GENERAL statement about Jesus' activities. Below are several examples of Jesus encountering individuals in need. In each case, Jesus meets their immediate need and does not mention "repentance" at all. Not to say that he doesn't preach this ever... just trying to bring up similar situations and how Jesus dealth with them.

-Jairus's daughter (Matthew 5, Mark 9, Luke 8)
-The woman who suffered from bleeding (Matthew 9, Mark 5, Luke 8)
-2 blind men (Matthew 9)
-The man with the shriveled hand (Matthew 12, Mark 3, Luke 6)
-Syrophonecian woman (Matthew 15, Mark 7)
-Another blind man (Matthew 20, Mark 10, Luke 18)
-Feeding the 5000 (and 4000) (Luke 9, Matthew 14, etc)
-Raising Lazarus from the dead (Mark 11)

Practically speaking, this little boy is very young and likely very distracted by the physical symptoms caused by AIDS and starvation. He might not be able to speak, or comprehend much of anything. To assume that he could even grasp what "redemption" is and why it is important, and that unless he grasps this he will be cast off and rejected by God is, it seems to me, quite ignorant. Of course I support spreading the gospel, but i DO believe that this is best done in an authentic, relational way or at least right after addressing the obvious physical/emotional needs of the person hearing it. The gospel is alive and seen best through acts of love and kindness. THIS will get the initial attention of everyone. THIS should be the focus of every single christian blog, t.v. show, and church sermon. After we get some cred in this area, maybe we will be taken more seriously when we start spouting off about redemption and salvation from hell. It takes more than sprinkling christian words over his head.

This goes without saying but I must- early Christians were worldshakers b/c they had a message that affected the way they lived. In other words God's Kingdom was a message that showed it's validity in the fruit of its people. The early Christian preached Christ as kurios (Lord) & most Caesars didn't like that at all. But that also took care of the poor & widows.

The most important part of ministry is the Gospel MESSAGE for it impacts a persons life forever... the second part is acts of kindness which should be done if possible, but it's not always possible. A thirsty person is most likely to listen to you if you offer them some water.. but offering water without the Gospel is only a temporary thing...

& yes, the 1st century is different from our time but you still have people being persecuted for the same message of Jesus & His cross.. Here in America we playoff of the American dream of health, wealth, happiness.. but I must agree with this quiz.. that's not the Gospel. It's a way to manipulate the have-nots to follow Christ for gifts, not b/c He's Lord.

the point is that the Gospel is offense to the unrighteous mind, but a message of life-improvement, wealthy-increasing, or healing is only offense to Biblical Christians & agnostics. John Piper is right, watch the video posted.. that's why I love Piper -God is something to be desired, not just a gift-giver.

Chris,

This is one of the best things I have seen you do! Excellent! It makes the point so very well.

I'd just say that it's important to look after people's needs as it's hard to minister to them if they're dead and providing at such a basic level can bridge very large gaps, but in the same token, the preaching of the gospel needs to complement such aid with a strong presence to avoid becoming a simple social outreach doing such things for "the good of mankind" rather than for God's glory. These, while separate, both need to be present, similar to how faith and repentance are separate, yet both key components of conversion.

Similarly, Jesus performed quite a number (though not all) of His healing miracles after people showed genuine faith; while their physical state mattered, Jesus also cared for their spiritual state.

The order of physical and spiritual care is case-dependent, but the important aspect is that both sides are present.

Well . . . I was about to comment on how ridiculously easy this quiz was, but after reading a couple of the comments I can see that not everyone is getting the point . . . wow. Sad. Great quiz. Thanks for the laugh. :)

Well, the problem is that most of those questions are legends anyway. No one really knows how or why Peter or Paul died. And history has proven that while they might have been killed in other arenas, Christians were never fed to the lions in the Coliseum.

Eric - "Jesus couldn't prevent that?" Maybe you can elaborate on what you mean by this. I don't want to mis-understand your point.

Wow... The majority of modern churches and even the churches you feature on this website preach the gospel and repentance to sinners and actually they typically use the series you feature to do so just in a creative way just like Jesus, Paul, and Peter. Also I agree with others that Jesus always met people's physical need before he talked to them spiritually that's one of the biggest ways churches have gotten off the bible every church needs to concentrate more on service overall many churches today do very poorly on that and are preaching love but not being loving and taking care of people's needs.

How true and I cannot imagine any Christian getting any of these wrong. It is something many Christians don't want to admit about the preaching and churches they go to. Praise God my preacher preaches straight and not for the satisfaction of the people but for the satisfaction of our Savior. Our church is small because of this...because many Christians want a "feel good message". I will pass this on to him and I think he will appreciate it and share it soon with the congregation. Blessings to you all!

As to the photo of the starving child (the only question that has seemed to generate controversy), any logical adult would conclude that the only reason a Christian or other outside person would even be in the presence of that child would be on a mission of mercy to feed and bring healthcare. The difference between the Christian and the other outsider is what follows: presenting the "good news" that begins with repentence or simply saying, "God loves you because I brought you food." If no one brings the child food does that prove God does not love him?

Merry I couldn't agree with you more!

Thanks, my wife and I forward this to our friends. I'll link to this one soon.

Greg

Great post, good point, the difference is increddibly obvious, and it's exactingly true. This is truly what is preached at many churches these days. A self-help, felt needs, best life now 'gospel'. Everyone's harping on the starving child question, but I haven't seen anyone say "this is not happening at our churches today!!" And since it IS happening at our churches today, wouldn't it be more 'relevant' to have a 'conversation' about WHY our churches push this 'message' and WHAT can we do about it? Since we can't refute what is happening, and how it is OBVIOUSLY different from Scripture, let's talk about THAT.

The starving child debate is easy.

Do both. Jesus did. Why neglect both? Bam, done. Now let's move on to the more important discussion before once again, like usual, we get distracted over something so simple.

Gotta go make dinner, love y'all. Kthxbye.

Joe

Chris, The point of the "quiz" was easy. The way it was presented, rendered it pointless. It is offensive, exploitive (using a starving child's photo, the child is not able to permit or deny the use of his image for a "pop quiz", or doesn't it matter, is he less than you or I ? ...How is this supposed to convict the hearts it's allegedly trying to reach. It was something thrown together for vultures to come feeding on... And as unpopular as my comment may be to others, I pray that those who have commented and those who have not, take time to pray, read their bibles and reflect on how Jesus' would approve or not approve the "quiz" presentation and the comments given. Then ask themselves, did it edify (build up) anything?

Try this quiz question:

When disaster threatens, she prays: "Dear God…If you stop this hurricane and save our family, we will be forever grateful and recommend you to all our friends.” Who?

Just for clarification Eric, most of those examples are people who had faith in Jesus.. for example the lady with the blood issue said "If I could just touch the hem of his garment I'd be healed."
Other times Jesus did healings to prove His claims. Jesus Himself said this when He said 2 things testify to me: My Father & the works I do.
Matter of fact, Jesus did most wonderous things to verify His position & message.

I'm not fighting you, but I think you are comparing apples to oranges. You are comparing our acts of kindness to Jesus' miraculous works.

Frosta, I feel you are exaggerating when you say most of the churches on this site preach the Gospel (Biblically that is). This site is meant to hold us accountable by pointing out inconsistencies. Joel Osteen mentions "repentance" at the end of his sermon, but it seems like an addon just to say he mentioned it. He doesn't explain it at all, it's disconnected from his message.

As an upcoming pastor/minister I don't want to fall into the trap of people's pleasing or tickling ears.

You forgot another answer for the last question...a quote from Mother Theresa....

We never try to convert those who receive [aid from us] to Christianity but in our work we bear witness to the love of God’s presence …… If an individual believes that [his religion] is the only way to God for her or him, this is the way God comes into his life and this is his way to salvation.

That one was for Eric, btw :)

Melody wrote:

It is not "God loves you because I brought you food", but rather, "I brought you food because I have experienced the self-sacrificing love of God and I want to share it with you." And the opposite of that would be: "I did not bring you food because I have not experienced and submitted to the self-sacrificing love of God". A verse that I have wrestled with so much is 1John 3:16-17. I am all for taking God's Word at face value - but lets not leave the hard parts out. Believing what is a sin and what is not a sin does not require that much sacrifice from me - it doesn't require 'taking up my cross daily'... Unless we believe that neglecting the poor, the immigrants, and prisoners is a sin. Jesus' litmus test for His true followers was pretty simple. It wasn't whether you thought God's word was infallible and inerrant, it was whether you fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and visited the prisoner (Matt 25).

Scripture is precious and priceless - it is how we see who Jesus is. And Jesus revealed the Father to us. He has shown us the way to walk - towards the cross.

Melody, true an outsider would probably be visiting those children with mercy at heart. But we who are not there in person must not forget that we are in a global culture now, and we are thus globally responsible.

In Conclusion: In the parable of the seeds Jesus talks about sowing the 'Word of God'... not the Bible, but the Word. The same Word that created the world. The same Word that was made flesh. The Word that should be sown is not necessarily words, but Christ manifested in our selfless love towards others.

Blessings,
jeremy

for what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul

he died while you were debating which came first the chicken or the egg.

"Have you noticed that none of the popular American sermon themes seem appropriate in these contexts."

Perhaps if these "contexts" came here to America, these false gospel sermon themes would suddenly cease to exist...

Just for some of those who seem to miss the point:

James 2: 14What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

In answer to #4 I think he needs to hear most that American Christians are spending every spare dollar to free him from the bonds of poverty. Why wasn't that an option?

Well said Nicholas.

And what if he’s a Christian already? You don’t mention his state of salvation. I’m sure if he is already a believer, hearing the Roman Road one more time will really comfort him.

I do not believe I am exaggerating I do not know anything about Joel Osteen I speak specifically about the churches put up most are preaching the gospel and holding the bible as 100% true and inerrant. I say some I don't know about and the one churches video made it sound like they did not think much of God's word. The point is this just because a church preaches about sexuality does not mean they are failing to preach the gospel. Just because a church is preaching using movies as an illustration to help people understand what God wants for our lives does not mean they are failing to teach the gospel in fact many churches that use movies, music and other secular media to help illustrate their point are preaching the gospel through those means. For the most part this site attacks devout Christians who believe the bible 100% are try their very best to follow Christ and His commands. Most things are poorly researched filled with baseless assumptions. After I view the churches website the postings on this site are usually proved to be wrong. But still on this quiz it is attacking innocent churches and the big deal being made about the last question is because too many people who claim to follow Christ refuse to take care of the physical needs of the people they are ministering too. This does not show love it shows uncaring if someone truly loves God then they have to love people and want to help them physically spiritually and emotionally.

I think those who are criticising question #4 are completely missing the point. Don't focus on the poor child, because I think everyone here would be in agreement that our FIRST action would be to gather that child and his brothers and sisters and care for their immediate needs. Why are we even arguing this? That wasn't Chris's point or intention.

Rather, he's drawing a distinction between the feel-good fluff offered at many American pulpits today and the hard-truth gospel given by the Lord Himself. AFTER you ministered to the child's physical needs, would you preach to him about "living his best life now" or preach to him about Christ crucified for his sins and salvation?

Like I said, this boy could already be a Christian.

ok as an answer yes after his needs met i would talk to him about Christ but or better yet he would ask because he would see Christ in the person helping but after he accepts Christ he should be taught about other biblical principals like churches do he should know God's plan for sex what God's plan is for a fulfilling life (that would be serving Him(God))

Exactly so, Truman. Exactly so. And that was the point of my comment above.

For those who insist that Jesus always saw to "felt needs" first, try this account:

2And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.
3And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.
4And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?
5For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?
6But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.
7And he arose, and departed to his house.

Matthew 9:2-7. Apparently Jesus thought dealing with the man's sins was rather more important.

Nobody is saying that giving a kid some food if he's starving is a bad thing or not a Christian act. What we ARE saying is that it would be a horrific sin to let that child go unsaved, potentially into eternal separation from the Lord! All the other "fluff" lines are completely worthless to approach the need for redemption!

Now quit with the self-righteous "I'd feed the child" baloney. When's the last time you helped an elderly widow make her electric bill?

Amen,amen, and AMEN!

OUTSTANDING POST!! Keep them coming!

God bless,

Pastor Eric

OK - There are alot of 'what-ifs' with the child. What if he is a Christian, What if he is already getting aid, What if he and his buddies are just anorexic?

The point with question 4 is that we all know what verbal message the kid needs to hear. Of course we want him to know the love of Christ. The issue that is not addressed at all by this quiz however is that the so called 'hard' teachings that so many churches are leaving out aren't all that hard. The fact that I am a sinner and God still loves me is not a hard message - It is GOOD NEWS. The hard part of the gospel that so many 'Bible-Believing' pastors ignore is what comes after a conversion. Believing things is not that hard. Living things is.

To paraphrase Rich Mullins: Jesus said, "You must be born again", and that's great, but he said that to one person. So if you can tell me that, I can tell you that you have to sell everything you have and give it to the poor and then follow Jesus because He said that to one person as well... but I guess that is why God made highlighters, so we can highlight the parts we like and ignore the rest.

That being said, I do believe that there are churches out there that are not preaching good news, or living it. But from what I have seen and experienced those churches that try to meet people where they are at are doing both. There are folks surrendering their lives to Christ and helping the needy in these churches.

However, those churches that I see claiming to be preaching the true gospel very rarely emphasize the truly hard teachings of Jesus and the apostles. He did preach repentance, but His idea of repentance was alot more than walking the aisle in church - it looked like the sermon on the mount. It looked like a walk to calvary.

Mrs. Pilgrim, I apologize if I came across as self-righteous. That was not my intention and I will admit that I struggle with my own selfish tendencies day in and day out. And I will optimistically assume that your closing question didn't imply that you thought none of us actually did works of charity in our daily lives.

Frostra, I would give a great deal to know just how often you expect that seven-year-old boy to have sex in the next year, such that he needs to be taught "God's plan for sex."

...No, I take that back. I don't want to know.

Wow, it's refreshing to read something like this.

I find your pop quiz trivial and juvenile. Jesus preached repentence from dead works but He also preached the Kingdom of God which is the message concerning the coming Baptism in the Holy Ghost. Jesus was to baptize people in the Holy Ghost and with Fire that finally happened on the Day of Pentecost. My pastor recommended your pop quiz which I actually thought was going to be an actual test. As for the child with AIDS picture, I would have been led by the Holy Spirit to lay hands on the child, anoint him with oil, pray the prayer of faith, and watch the LORD raise him up. Then I would have fed him and told him of the God I serve and how much He loves the child, how He sent His Son to die for his sins, and that he could have my Savior in his heart as I have. Others would have seen the miracle and come to Christ for the saving of their bodies and as well as their souls. We are drawn to God because of His goodness to us...because He loved us first while we were yet sinners.

The Protestant Reformation was a political reformation not a religious one. The power structure of Europe rested in Rome and men wanted to be free from it. The Protestant Reformation was not known for its miracles, because it had none. The garbage John Calvin and others preached then is still garbage today. The Roman Catholics got it wrong and the rebelling Protestants got it wrong also in many areas. We will all get our theologies straightened out before the Judgment seat of Christ.

Jeremy, I feel compelled to commend you in your response to Mrs. Pilgrim. You did not react to the false accusation, that was without cause, or to the question that demanded proof of works, that followed. Instead, you studied your own heart. Which also led me to why the "purpose" of the "quiz" and the behavior in the comments is so hurtful to me. And Mrs. Pilgrim's comments are not the only comments I found unchristian-like. 1 "thanks for the laugh" , 1 in agreement to the laugh. Several back and forth debates and 1 " he could be dead in a year". 0 quotes from 2 Timothy, that instructs us to be strong in grace. Especially verses 15 thru 16. and 22 thru 26. Skipping the verses that I did, doesn't change the context of the others. 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that neededth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness....22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive: but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves: if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.: 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. There is also another verse that tell us how to rebuke and reprove also in 2Timothy, 4:2 Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine...And all verses, even the ones referring to exposing false doctrines, never instruct us to belittle or ridicule any man. Verses pertaining to that include concepts as to be sober in our warning, always to be Christ-like. The shortest verse is Jesus wept. He taught, never taunted. He showed compassion while creating division.
