I'm honestly confused. What was having a guy dressed as Elvis singing How Great Thou Art supposed to accomplish? I'm not sure what to say because try as I might, I honestly can't figure out what the church was trying to accomplish. Why not just let the parishioners sing and worship? I just don't get it. Maybe I'm stupid, but I just don't get it.

August is the 30th anniversary of Elvis's death. I'm not sure of the exact day, but if you notice, Elvis is all over the place on TV. Maybe that's the reason Elvis showed up in this church.

I remember seeing Elvis on TV singing "How Great Thou Art" and he was fabulous. However, that does not justify a church bringing in an Elvis impersonator!!

Holiness has left the building.

I can picture the conversation with friends:

"What did your church teach today?"

"I don't know but we had Elvis sing How Great Thou Art. It was pretty entertaining!"

"Did you learn about Jesus?"

"Was he in the band?"

...Sigh...

I went to the church and I found the world.....I went to
the world and found the church. That is an abomination to God.
That church is in a state of apostasy. It would be funny, if it wasn't so sad.

I'm sick. The 'leadership' of this congregation should be rebuked (see: 1 Timothy 5:20-21).
God isn't pleased with an image of an 'idol' singing songs for humor and for the cause of 'being relevant'.

Please review this link from Paul Proctor, here is a little quote from his writing, "That’s just how deceitful and alluring this world is with its imitation and imagery. Satan doesn’t use ugliness and suffering to seduce us into idolatry and eternal damnation. He uses beauty, youth, wealth, fame and pleasure to make us his own."

Let me get this straight. We can live like Elvis and still be holy as He is holy? You got to be kidding. This was a church --right? Statues of Baal can be ornamental , but does that mean we can use them in the church just because they are religious in tone?

I'm sorry, but that was just great signing and worship, using this gentleman's God-given vocal abilities, in a style reflecting another blessed voice (the real Elvis). At times, there are probably more theatrics in *your* own church that we could all get all up in arms over. Holiness is not being violated here folks, remember the church is not a building.

Direct your focus on spreading the gospel, not fretting over song in a style that is outside of "church normal".

If i'm not mistaken, Elvis died from drug overdose. A man, who I believe was not saved at the time of his death, is being imitated by somebody to lead the worship service? I guess, if ozzy osbourne, alice cooper , the band morbid angels, slayer, or iron maiden, if at one time played "How great thou art!", i guess it's ok if we imitate them and have fun worshipping.

Folks, i don't agree with what Chris P said, being in church is desiring to be holy... and holiness is being violated. We are sinners saved by grace, and to be in church, even the physical building should be consecrated. Bear in mind, in the old testament, a high priest who has not consecrated himself before going to the holy of holies will be struck dead in a heartbeat. How much more can Elvis Presley enter the presence of God?

The bible says, "where there are two or three gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them." If the presence of God is in the midst of that church, then holiness abounds in that church, consecration abounds in that church, righteousness abounds in that church. and frankly, Elvis presley impersonation does not belong in there.

Chris p,
You are in (almost, because of grace) complete darkness on 'holiness'. Let me shine some light on the definition.
Holiness = Separation to God, from the WORLD
A (fond, in somes eyes like yours) image of an aduterer, woremonger, drug user, and drunken "child of disobedience" is what Paul would refer to it as, has no place in the 'congregation of beleivers, the Called Out Ones'(Church).
Wake up...you are being deceived with your fond memories of Elvis and relevant, pragmatic church business models where everything goes with one exception- TEACHING REPENTANCE, SEPARATION FROM THE WORLD, BECAUSE OF HIS SHED BLOOD PURCHASE.
Please, I beg you read this passage and understand the part about "that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, BUT HAVE PLEASURE IN THEM THAT DO THEM."
(CAPITAL emphasis for your sake, is mine)

Romans 1:28-33 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV)

28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Stop loving entertainment in place of HOLY teaching.

Chris P: Love me tender, love me true, you are a complete fool.

I'm the singer and all this song was was a 3 min part of a 50 min. service called Retro this was the final sermon and to close out the series my Pastor thought that Elvis was retro as retro gets and he made a disclaimer denouncing Elvis' life style but that his Gospel Music was his best selling music and I'm a proud member of my Church and only sang because I was asked to. I am a part-time Elvis Impersonator and Disc Jockey and I think people ought to reserve judgement on me and my Church until you know all the facts and examine your own hearts first. Christ died for ALL mankind not just for those YOU deem worthy. I would never do anything to shame my Lord and maybe if you knew me first you would see that. I'm sorry you seem to hate me and my Church?

It makes me think of a joke by an atheist comedian. "If there really was a God, Elvis would still be alive and all the impersonators would be dead." :-)

It is a shame to read such disdain comments from people who speak of representing God and worship.

Your church is in my area and you are misrepresenting God. it sounds so spirtual to say you say go win the lost. No one is getting saved from you acting like Elvis a ungodly man. Where did you read that in the bible. Is not Christ the example. We are to demonstrate Christ, not bag lost people by there lusts to come to church. What foolishenss. You need to repent and stop hypocriting around, people go to hell cause this church world misrepresents the almighty and plays games. God have mercy. Jesus would shut that down and chase you off stage with a whip. He is a Holy Holy Holy Lord and he angry. You will know the foolisness of this when you satand before him in judgement and asks you why you thought pretending to be a wicked man gave glory to him. When elvis sang gospel songs he became even more of a hypocrit. Hipocrits give glory to the Devil. Doesnt matter the song he was singing, true worship is done in Spirit and in truth. He misrepresent God all mighty and the Christians of Elvis day weren't wasting there time with him, why woul the Christians of today! I fight for the lost, will you truly fight and put away your own thinking.
